Over a hundred and twenty million children world wide still lack access to education, due to poverty, gender discrimination and tradition. Central Asia Institute is trying to change that. Its mission focuses on community based education and literacy program mes especially for girls in the northern regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The co-founder and executive director of central institute is Greg Mortenson. He knows that the best way to bring up hope and peace is through education. Mortenson said we can drop arms, we can handle conducts, we can build roads and electricity but until the girls are educated the society will not change. He was free even spoke with the little girls in their native dialect.
Greg first traveled to Pakistan in 1993 on an expedition to climb k2 the world second highest mountain exhausted and disoriented after he failed some of the attempt. Greg wondered away from his crew. He eventually stumbled into Korphe with the impoverished villagers no specific further than to help while recovering he observed the children sitting out door scratching their lessons in the doors with sticks when Greg saw their fused desire and determination to learn, he promised that he would return to build them a school. In 1996 Greg, fulfilled his promise and the school in korphe became a reality. Since then central ancient institute has built and supported dozens of schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. His philosophy is to empower the local people, through their own initiative. Why is educating girls so important? There are several global studies that show if you educate a girl to at least the fifth grade level it does some important things. (1) Reduce the population explosion and improve the basic quality of life itself. But it takes several generations. Greg says the real enemies is ignorant and hatred so we should all put all our strength, our prayers and resources to the education of our children
